Janice Brown and Barb Blasch met in 2013 at a local Cincinnati bluegrass jam where they talked a little and played music, mostly in the background of the other performers. A couple weeks later, Janice asked Barb if she knew the Dixie Chicks song, “Traveling Soldier.” Of course, that was one of Barb’s favorite songs! From there, Skirt and Boots was born. Getting together to practice songs and learn harmonies, they soon discovered a mutual love for the same artists. It wasn’t long before the gals decided to “play out.” They quickly added Kevin Haggard and became a trio. Kevin’s bass and guitar rounded out the sound, plus he brought warm vocals and his own set of lead songs to the mix.
A year or so went by, and due to conflicts and work schedules, Skirt and Boots was in need of a substitute bass player. John Murray joined Janice and Barb for several performances when Kevin was unavailable. John did such a good job that the band adopted him and became a four piece band. In 2017, Trina Emig started filling in with Skirt and Boots at some gigs. Trina’s musicianship is stellar and her banjo and mandolin breaks took the overall sound up a notch. It was an easy decision to add Trina to Skirt and Boots as a permanent member. With five musicians who give their heart and soul to the music, Skirt and Boots harmony vocals, instrumentation and creative blend of songs make them a truly unique group.
